Iran Fires Missiles at Israel, Shattering Trump-Declared Ceasefire

Just an hour after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire was in effect, Iran launched missiles at Israel early Tuesday, according to the Israel Defense Forces. This attack immediately jeopardized the short-lived truce, with Israel vowing a forceful response.

Israeli media reported that the military detected an Iranian barrage Tuesday morning. While the missiles appear to have been intercepted with no reported injuries, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the military to “respond forcefully to Iran’s violation of the ceasefire with intense strikes against regime targets in the heart of Tehran,” as reported by the Times of Israel.

Earlier on Tuesday, both Israel and Iran had indicated their agreement to the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan. Israel claimed it had “achieved all the objectives” of its military campaign against Iran.

Before the deal seemingly unraveled, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued a statement calling the ceasefire “an important step towards restoring stability” and urged Iran to “engage seriously in a credible diplomatic process.” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also welcomed Trump’s ceasefire call as “a very positive development.”

Trump had announced the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran on Monday evening, dubbing it the “12 Day War,” and declared it in effect early Tuesday, warning against any violations.

This latest escalation follows a series of recent attacks. Tehran had launched missiles that killed four people in Beersheba, to which Israel responded with pre-dawn airstrikes across Iran. Earlier this month, Israel initiated military strikes against Iran’s nuclear program and top military leaders. The U.S. directly entered the conflict on Saturday, with Trump ordering bombings of three Iranian nuclear sites. In retaliation, Iran attacked a U.S. air base in Qatar on Monday, just hours before the ceasefire declaration.
