Trump Blasts Macron, Departs G7 Early

President Donald Trump sharply criticized French President Emmanuel Macron, calling him “publicity seeking” and stating that “whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong.” Trump’s comments came in a late-night social media post on Truth Social, published as he departed the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, a day earlier than planned.

Macron’s Ceasefire Claim Dismissed

Macron had suggested to reporters at the G7 that Trump’s early departure was to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, noting, “There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange.” The French president added that “the U.S. assured they will find a ceasefire and since they can pressure Israel, things may change.”

However, Trump quickly refuted Macron’s assertion. In his social media post, Trump declared, “Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a β€˜cease fire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong!” He further emphasized, “He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!” Earlier, Trump had also issued a stark warning: “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”

A Setback for EU Engagement

Trump’s direct jab at Macron represents a significant setback for the European Union’s efforts to maintain a working relationship with the U.S. president. Macron has long positioned himself as a key intermediary between Europe and Trump, cultivating a nearly decade-long relationship that dates back to Trump’s first term. While Trump had previously praised Macron’s intelligence during last year’s U.S. election campaign, he also cautioned that the French president would “take the shirt off your back if you didn’t know what you were doing.”
